Those who have been following my blogs for a while know that I always made my previous trips alone. It was a natural instinct for me, that sense of independence. Every decision was mine to make, moment to moment. It was my responsibility to confront or overcome any challenge that arose. In solitude, undisturbed. Yet, I did find great joy in encountering other cyclists on my travels, sometimes even riding together for a while, but ultimately, I always ventured on alone with myself. Just me and my bike, Wilson.

After several days of rest at Rio Pico, while the rain poured down with torrents and the snow fell from the sky with large flakes, Paul and I decided to get back on. The rest days provided time for evaluation of the recent tough cycling days, self-reflection, reflections and deliberation. Are we avoiding the tough routes? What does that mean for the rest of the trip? Does Paul want to give it another chance to see if he can still somehow get pleasure or satisfaction out of these tough cycling days? What are our options for the next several hundred miles?

PLING! ‘Hey! Wij zitten dit weekend op de camping in Harskamp, dus mocht je in de buurt zijn tijdens een fietsritje…’ Heel leuk om weer eens bij te praten met vrienden en een prima excuus om te kijken of ik mijn kampeerspullen op de Santos krijg, hoe het dan fietst en om uit te proberen hoe mijn nieuwe matje ligt. Even later heb ik een plekje op de camping gereserveerd. Nou ja, een plekje… Vanwege de corona mag ik niet op dezelfde plek staan, dus ik krijg een voetbalveld voor mijzelf. ‘Trekkersveldje’ zegt de mevrouw even niets.

We have now arrived in Chile and are doing Route 7, Carretera Austral. This is a favorite destination for many travelers because it has beautiful landscapes with mountains, glaciers and many rivers. In the south of Argentina, we dreamed of getting away from the strong headwinds. In Chile, we discover that the grass is greener on the other side of the Andes. The reason? It rains a lot!
